Uni results... Oh... Shit
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
MATE1412 - Materials Engineering 1 - CR 62
MATH2020 - Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra - D 73
PHYS2202 - The Physics of Particles - D 72
PHYS2220 - Atoms, Nuclei, Particles and Galaxies - D 72

Materials was fun to learn but (apparently) not good to be examined in.

I thought I was doing well in that maths unit. No idea what I screwed up. Probably the exam, it was worth 70% after all.

Physics (pluralised somehow) weren't as good as I'd hoped but were better than last semester.

Still, pretty crap results compared to all my previous results. I was considering changing from materials to civil but can't be bothered. I'm hoping it's just a one off, that I didn't really do the exam properly or something. Still have to consider whether to do a materials degree or a mechanical degree majoring in materials, but I can leave that for this time next year.

Am doing all three second year mech units next semester, two of which involve group work. This will probably destroy me but I have others to take down with me doing the units with me.

Boo!!!

So, after watching a lot of Disney over the last few weeks, my co-workers and I have discussed it a lot. I was wondering which Disney film (or general kid's film) you found the scariest when you watched it and which, if any, you find the scariest now or you can just do what I did and talk about the ones you want to.

Pinocchio.
I still consider this the scariest. Can't remember how old I was at the time. I mean seriously, he is turned into a donkey and eaten by a whale. How could you not be freaked out?

Princess Anastasia (20th Century Fox)
Pretty scary now that I look back. Rasputin did fall apart and it involved getting you in your dreams as well as the whole 'transport kills people' thing. Though I missed all of this as a child.

Matilda (Tristar)
Rather scary now. The choky and the swinging the girl by the pigtails is a little over the top. But I missed this completely as a child too.

Also, detect button!!! How I missed you so.

I like to think of it as Chinese whispers for memes
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
So, I wasn't impressed by this meme (stolen from [info]violetsquirrel , figured I'd 'answer' the questions in multiple choice form (though not the actual poll thing).

Altered meme )

For those who were wondering what the original instructions were

"You know how sometimes people on your friendslist post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-word answers seldom help anyone out."

Work mostly
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
Enjoying work a lot. There aren't enough kids coming through often enough to keep us busy so we spend most of our time watching films. I bought more films yesterday (and today during my shift) because we'd watched the others too much (kids were coming in telling us they'd seen it the last time they came).

Since working there I've watched
Finding Nemo, six times
Madagascar 2, twice
Hannah Montana Movie, twice
Shrek, twice
Wall-E, half a time
The Aristocats, twice
The Little Mermaid, thrice
One Hundred and One Dalmations, twice
The Nightmare Before Christmas, twice
Matilda, once
Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, half a time. (Why would a fairy fly in a hot air balloon? They can fly!!!)

I have nearly exhausted my film collection (half of those weren't mine... well... I don't own four of them) and I still have twice as much work as I've already done to go (assuming I don't get more hours than I'm currently rostered for)

Also, the Pixar Marathon was much fun, even though, by that stage, I was able to silently (mostly) follow Finding Nemo the whole way. Sorry to those who we (I apologise for Ellie too) annoyed during that film.

P.S. Where the hell IS Medina?

Geocaching - I just felt like sharing
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
So, Friday night was going to be spent with me simply watching the rest of an anime (fate stay night) but was instead interrupted by Jess (my brother's girlfriend who is living with us) and her friend Jacinta. They had just come back from some geocaching* and were intending to go around Crawley/Nedlands looking for more.

An explanation
Geocaching involves people all over the world setting up hidden caches in various locations. They then put the location of the cache on the website for people to find using GPS or otherwise, as well as occasionally putting in more details on how to find it, hints, etc.

Inside the caches is usually something to write on so you can put who you are and when you found it. Occasionally they also include enough space to drop little things in some of which are tagged. You can look the tagged items up on the website to find where they've been so far (Jacinta had a toy Bruce from Finding Nemo who was in France prior to his visit to WA).

The idea is for people to search for them using the GPS coordinates or otherwise and sharing their experience on the website and just enjoying the treasure hunting-like experience. One important part is to not let those around you (you're going to love this Sheeba - they call non-geocachers 'muggles') know what you're up to and find or ruin the cache.

We tried a total of seven sites and managed to find four of them (technically I found each of them but the others would have found three of those if I hadn't seen it first - yes, I know that's a stupid thing to say but it made sense in my head).
- One we couldn't really find the path it was referring to.
- Another we ran away because the sprinklers told us to.
- And the one in Matilda Bay somewhere we couldn't find because the GPS was acting up and we were lacking torches (we were trying to use our phones).

Fortunately, Jess has just gotten an iPhone (read: GPS device of some description) so we can do it when we get bored instead of watching Gilmore Girls so we each get some exercise (yes, I realise I don't need to lose any weight).

Anyway, I have lasagna to devour now.

Road works hate me
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
It took an hour for me to get to my Mum's today (she lives roughly 20 minutes away). Unfortunately, this is my fault because I didn't realise Esplanade was closed as well as Mounts Bay Rd (West).

I saw many examples of bad driving most of which involved no indication. More annoying were the lack of decency amongst the drivers: if the bus has to get across two lanes of traffic let it, it's bigger than you.

On the way home, it took 35 minutes. The road wasn't open yet, though it was supposed to be, so I went via a nice King's Park route after a very roundabout journey through the city (may have circumnavigated a few blocks). Turns out King's Park also has road works. Then upon getting home I found the roads were open.
In retrospect I should have just waited in the car park for the road to re-open.

Also, my door now has a 'not your room!' sign on it. It seems to be working.

So much for getting my lab book done...

Edit: I'm in Medina?

Room

[info]red_elf_49
Swapped bedrooms with Cam (brother) so he and his girlfriend would have more space (she's moving in soon).

Rather ranty )

In other news I finally got a job for Christmas it is a great job but has the worst outfit ever. I'll be driving the Christmas train for Myer. Yes, great job in my opinion, but in order to drive the train I will be dressed in what is basically a Mario costume. Hopefully I get enough hours to cover for the initial embarrassment from people I know finding me. But anyway, I'll have enough money for Christmas (I hope) and to buy me some things I've been meaning to for a while.

Now I must sleep.

Goodnight.

Panto
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
Since I went three times (it's Eesha's fault) to Panto I figure I should write something about it.

The performance itself was rather amusing. I preferred A Very Young and Restless Fairytale's plot more but the jokes in this one were better. It was so sad when Alexander died, damn you writers!!! I laughed at 'the bee dance', 'supplies' and 'Claire changing gimpy leg' every time, perhaps a little more than was necessary.

It was interesting seeing it every time because I got to see it evolve a little. Everyone got more confident. A couple of jokes were added. Operation replaced the doctors' discussion. I noticed Roland's sign change (totally didn't take until the third viewing). The last night was definitely the best. The Thriller dance was quite obviously better that night too. Watching the elevator fail and Charming's glasses break was amusing too.

I loved heckling, though I may have done a bit too much in the last one (I was enjoying it a lot). My favourite heckles were "he's inside you", "Australia says no" and "it's Eesha's fault". The last one especially even though only Bec, Eesha and I (maybe Ellie too) would have understood it and the second one had some good retaliation from the cast. There were a couple of good ones the first time from actual audience members but I forgot them. Confusing/annoying Kate was fun too. I was really hoping Ash's dad would say "who's your daddy" but he unfortunately didn't.

Definitely seeing it all three times next time too, though I may usher twice then to save money.

Also, Ellie failed on Friday, failed hard.
Series of events:
She attacks me.
I grab her arms.
She thinks that, since I have her arms trapped, kneeing me would be a smart move.
I realise the possibility of this just as she does so our knees collide hurting her but not me (somehow).
She does this again.
I release her and she tries to kick me.
She rolls her ankle and falls over.
I laugh... a lot.

Application fun
Woodstock 2
[info]red_elf_49
Have applied for two things recently (well, I'm midway through applying through one of them), both Physics related.

The first is a vacation scholarship with the School of Physics to help them do lab work. So I'll be sitting there taking all the boring measurements they can't be bothered with for six weeks. I 'think' I'm quite likely to get into this.

The second is a studentship (science's version of non-mandatory vac work) at ICRAR (The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research) where I will also help with lab work but also get to learn things. This one goes for ten weeks and may possibly get me out of going to Esperance with my extended family for Christmas. I'm not sure how likely I am to get into this but given the number of selection criteria, chances aren't that good.

Both will be useful additions to my resume and (I think) the ICRAR studentship could work as vac work too but I'd have to look into that later.

Side note: Ooooh... how long has the 'Detect' button been there?
